John McMeekin from County Durham made no plea when he appeared in private at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court. He faces two charges of stealing a motor vehicle and one alleging housebreaking with intent to steal. The case was continued for further examination and McMeekin, whose address was given as Bishop Auckland, was remanded in custody. He is expected to make a second court appearance in a week’s time. Last month, a flatbed van was driven into The Co-operative Food store in Thornton’s Main Street. The incident happened in the early hours of May 17. Police sealed off the building, which had to be checked for structural damage. At the time, Detective Inspector Paul Dick from Glenrothes CID described it as a “serious and brazen crime”. The raid came just days after a Co-op shop in Angus was targeted, with cigarettes and alcohol stolen. In December, a stolen dumper truck was driven into the chain’s outlet on Kirkcaldy’s Lauder Road. Police said there was no indication the incidents were linked.
