A man tried to steal from a number of properties in Dundee after coming to the city to visit his grandparents’ graves.
Jamie Stewart, 21, was discovered in domestic residences on Kirkstead Drive and Tweed Crescent on December 4 where it could be reasonably inferred he intended to steal.
Stewart, of Gilburn Place, Boness, had been in Dundee to visit the graves of his grandparents on the same date and had apparently missed his train home.
Depute fiscal Trina Sinclair told Dundee Sheriff Court the householder of a property on Kirkstead Drive had been sitting in their living room when they heard the front door of their house open.
She said: “At 11.20pm on December 4, a householder was in the living room when they heard the door open.
“Police were called and while they were there received further calls in respect to the accused’s behaviour.
“The accused was then in Tweed Crescent at around 11.55pm when the owner of a house their noted their security light had gone on.
“Police caught up with the accused at midnight and found him in the area.”
Defence solicitor Fraser McKinnon told the court Stewart was motivated by a diazepam addiction.
He said: “He was visiting Dundee to visit the graves of his grandparents.
“He was taken into care at the age of 11 and has been addicted to diazepam.
“This offence appears to have been motivated by his drug addiction.”
Stewart pleaded guilty to two charges of being in a residence without reasonable excuse where it could be inferred he intended to steal on December 4.
He further admitted to committing the offence while on bail, which had been granted at Airdrie Sheriff Court on November 11.
Sheriff Alastair Carmichael said a custodial sentence was his “only option” and sentenced Stewart to 12 weeks in prison.
