A 35-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the attempted murder of a woman in Glenrothes.
Local man Stephen Ramsay is accused of a brutal assault on a 35-year-old woman at a flat in Delgatie Court, in the Pitteuchar area of the town, on Saturday evening.
The woman has been named locally as Lisa Jane Donaldson.
She remains in a serious condition in hospital.
Ramsay appeared in private at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court on Monday.
He faces a charge of assault to severe injury, permanent disfigurement, danger of life and attempted murder.
The accused also faces three further charges of assaulting police officers.
Ramsay made no plea and the case was continued for further examination.
He was remanded in custody and is due to appear in court again within the next eight days.
Local residents described witnessing intense police activity in the street at around 8pm on Saturday evening.
They said a large area around the two-storey block was cordoned off, including an area of grass and trees across from the property.
One resident said the cordons “gradually got smaller” over the weekend until just the block at the centre of the inquiry and a small area of grass was taped off.
On Monday, police officers were still guarding the ground floor flat and crime scene officers wearing protective clothing could be seen inside the stairwell.
A member of the public said residents were anxious to know what had happened.
He said: “Police have been standing outside the block in shifts.
“I think it’s shocking and they need to tell people what’s going on. It’s our neighbourhood and we need to know things.”
Another neighbour said: “We came back to the house and had dinner. At around 8pm, that’s when we saw all the flashing lights.
“There were police vans, four police cars, an ambulance and CID cars.”
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “A 35-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the attempted murder of a 35-year-old woman at an address in Delgatie Court, Glenrothes, on Saturday February 23.
“She was taken to the Victoria Hospital where she remains in a serious condition.”
