A thief who featured in a TV show has been jailed for a year for stealing designer pants and fake tan.
Police officers stopped Brian Don for a chat and several pairs of pants and socks fell out of his jacket.
A solicitor said Don had taken Valium and Xanax and believed he was invisible when he carried out shoplifting raids at Debenhams and Boots in Perth.
Solicitor Paul Ralph added that he was surprised that the Debenhams chain was in financial trouble if they were managing to sell pants at £48 for two pairs.
Don, 38, first came to notoriety after featuring in the BBC documentary Chancers about a rehab scheme for young offenders.
Perth Sheriff Court heard yesterday that Don targeted High Street stores to steal expensive items he could resell for money to buy food.
The court was told Don was still receiving 90mls of methadone daily, more than 13 years after being funded to attend the £600,000-a-year Airborne Initiative.
He has committed more than 120 crimes since featuring on the documentary and his
“co-star” Raymond Urquhart died of a suspected drugs overdose four years ago.
He admitted stealing four fake tan products worth £120 from Boots on February 27 and two packs of pants worth £96 from Debenhams last month.
The court was told that Don was released from prison on February 1. He was given his prison grant on the same day and applied for Universal Credit.
Mr Ralph said: “He had just come out of Debenhams. Police officers checked how he was doing and some items fell out of his jacket. It was socks and underwear. At the price they were selling the underwear it surprises me that Debenhams is in trouble.
“Valium and Xanax were made available to him. As is all too regular with Xanax, people think they are invisible.”
Sheriff Lindsay Foulis told Don: “You have let me down.”
