Tayside businesses warned as pair attempt to use ‘fake’ £50 bank notes at three Broughty Ferry shops

Police have warned businesses in Tayside after two people allegedly attempted to use fake £50 notes in three Broughty Ferry stores.

A man and woman tried to pay for items at three shops in the Dundee suburb on Wednesday using Northern Irish bank notes which appeared to be false.

All three of the stores refused to accept their money.

The man and woman are said to have spoken with Irish accents.

A Tayside Police Division statement reads: “Police Scotland would like to warn shopkeepers and small business owners in Tayside to be aware of possible fake Northern Irish bank notes being presented for use in the area.

“Three shops in Broughty Ferry reported yesterday (November 20) that an Irish man and woman had attempted to purchase small value items with a Northern Irish £50 note, which appeared to be fake.

“They were unsuccessful in doing so at each location due to alert actions of shop staff.

“Due to their unfamiliar nature here in Scotland, it can be difficult to determine if a large denomination Northern Irish note is a fake or forgery at first glance, and any decent forgery will pass initial inspection and only be found to be fake when examined closely.

“Unfortunately we do not have further information as to the exact type (i.e. issuing bank) or serial number of the note in question to show you.”
