Police in Dundee are treating the death of a woman whose body was discovered at a popular city park as “unexplained”.
Officers sealed of a section of Finlathen Park in Fintry shortly after 9am yesterday.
Police Scotland initially refused to disclose the sex of the individual but have now confirmed it was a woman.
A spokeswoman for the force said formal identification has yet to take place.
She added: “The death is being treated as unexplained. Inquiries are ongoing.”
Police sealed off a section of the park around the Dighty Burn just past the Finlathen Park Bridge at 9.15am on Tuesday.
Officers stood guard at the cordon and at the Fintryside end of the park in front of a block of flats where shocked residents watched events unfold.
The body was found in the water, close to a football pitch which is just along from a mini skate park.
Investigations are ongoing and a section of the park remained sealed off late yesterday afternoon. A small tent could be seen by the banks of the Dighty Burn.
Dundee City Council workers were also present in the park on Tuesday.
The Dighty Burn, which also passes through Drumgeith Park, was previously known as Scotland’s hardest working stream, with more than 30 mills using its water.
The two parks on either side of the crumbling Finlathen Park footbridge were created in place of the mills when they became derelict.
