Dundee residents have expressed their anger over the imminent closure of a city post office.

Spar runs the postal branch at Glamis Road  but it is due to close its doors for good on Tuesday.

Customers say the community will suffer as a result of the contract with Spar ending.

It is understood customers were told the space would be used to expand the convenience store’s fast food provision.

Locals will be forced to travel to the neighbouring branches, based in Menzieshill, Charleston or Lochee, up to a mile away.

One concerned resident said: “We have come to reply on the post office at Glamis Road use it frequently, so we are disappointed in its closure.

“More fast food will mean more profits for the store but it is sacrificing a facility which has great benefits for the local people.

“If this closure comes to pass, we will all be poorer here.

“Older citizens, in particular, who rely on it to do business or keep in touch with friends and relatives will suffer when the branch closes.”

SPAR did not respond to The Courier’s request for comment but in a letter to another resident, they said the closure was down to financial reasons.

The letter read: “I am afraid we have no alternative but to close the PO branch as the volume of transactions it undertakes and the level of commission paid to us by Post Office Ltd is below the financial sustainability that we have set.

“Quite simply, not enough people are using it and the commission earned barely covers the staff cost of administering the transactions within the branch.”

A Post Office spokesperson said: “The operator for Glamis Road Post Office has resigned and the premises that we do not own, will be withdrawn for Post Office on 17 March at 9.30am.

“We understand how important a Post Office is to a community and we are advertising the vacany. In the interim alternative branches include Menzieshill and Charleston.

“Any retailer interested in incorporating a Post Offic in their premises should email ND.enquiries@postoffice.co.uk or 0333 345 5560, then select option 2. The vacany is advertised on www.runapostoffice.co.uk. “
