The bulk of Dundee’s leisure facilities and cultural landmarks will close from Tuesday evening.
Swimming pools, gyms, libraries and other facilities run by Leisure and Culture Dundee will temporarily shut to the public in a matter of hours due to concerns around the outbreak of covid-19.
Leisure and Culture Dundee – an arm’s-length body which operates most of the city’s sports facilities, as well as its libraries and cultural attractions – said the decision was made in the interests of health and safety.
Among the popular sites shutting are the McManus, Olympia Swimming Pool, Mills Observatory, Camperdown Wildlife Park, Dundee Ice Arena and the Ancrum Outdoor Centre.
A spokesman for Leisure and Culture Dundee said: “The health and safety of our visitors and staff is our number one priority.
“We have taken the difficult decision to close all our Leisure and Culture Dundee venues to the public temporarily from normal closing times this evening and will be reviewing our service delivery over the coming days.
“All our activities, events and programmes have also been suspended.”
It comes after V&A Dundee, Dundee Contemporary Arts and the Rep Theatre announced closures from Tuesday onward.
The Scottish Government says 195 people across Scotland have now contracted covid-19. This is a rise from 171 on Monday.
There are now 20 confirmed cases in Tayside. The number of cases in Fife remains at seven.
