A quick-witted Dundee mum got creative after her twin boys asked for a McDonald’s drive-thru as a birthday present.
Elaine Scougal even crocheted some chicken nuggets as she pulled out all the stops to create a replica fast-food restaurant for Ollie and Cameron, who turned seven on Saturday.
The identical twins, who have Down’s syndrome, were thrilled with the result and spent the weekend serving each other “in Dundee’s only operating McDonald’s” due to the coronavirus outbreak.
Elaine said: “The boys are always very laid back about presents and never ask for much for birthdays or Christmas.
“They mainly enjoy the family and food aspect of special occasions.
“Lately they’ve really been enjoying watching some child bloggers on YouTube and one of them role-plays McDonald’s in some of her videos.
“As a result, the boys were inspired to ask for a drive thru as a birthday present.”
Elaine said she felt compelled to make it happen and put a post up on Facebook which prompted a friend to get in touch who said they had a McDonald’s kitchen that was no longer played with.
“I couldn’t believe my luck,” said Elaine.
“I then had the idea of popping into a McDonald’s to ask for some boxes to add to the authenticity of the finished product.
“They happily obliged.
“We already had some toy burgers and things.
“The only popular thing we were missing was chicken nuggets so I crocheted some from yarn.
“I also designed some menus and got them some staff hats from eBay.”
The twins have become internet hits since Elaine set up a Facebook page when they were just weeks old which now has more than 200,000 followers who enjoy watching home videos and reading about their latest updates.
Elaine posted a video, see below, of the moment the boys got their present and later they also enjoyed a conference call with family to make up for their cancelled party.
Elaine said: “They have been enjoying serving each other in Dundee’s only operating McDonald’s.
“We just need to work on their cooking skills to replicate the real thing.”
The family have also been contacted by the assistant manager of a local McDonald’s branch offering to give the boys a tour of their site, including the drive-thru, when they reopen.
Elaine said: “It was such a kind offer so I hope that happens in future.
“They’d love it, albeit I haven’t told them about it as I’ll need to ration the excitement.
“Who knows how long the current situation will go on for?”
