A Dundee restaurant is to donate more than 1,000 meals to front-line medical workers and city foodbanks.
Meze Grill, based in Broughty Ferry, dished up 40 lunches to staff at the Scottish Ambulance Centre on Thursday, having previously donated to Kings Cross Hospital.
The gesture was a way of thanking healthcare staff for their hard work and commitment during the pandemic.
In addition to supplying food to ambulance staff, the Mediterranean restaurant’s owner Ibrar Ibrahim and his team will donate 1,000 meals over the next month to Dundee Foodbank on Albert Street.
Ibrar said: “Like many other businesses in the area, we’ve felt the economic impact of the virus.
“Our Goa restaurant, which is upstairs from Meze Grill, closed three weeks ago and my six members of staff are working reduced hours.
“We are only doing home deliveries now.
“It’s a very grim situation, and it’s at times like these that you need to dig deep to support the local community.”
Meanwhile another Dundee business, Scran Fitness Food, has so far donated more than 100 pre-prepared meals to families struggling during the lockdown.
SFF, whose usual customers are fitness fans in search of healthy food, are sending the meals to the Balgarthno Campus in Dundee’s West End.
The meals are then handed out to struggling families, young carers and children who would usually benefit from hot school meals.
A spokesman said: “Due to the batch cooking nature of our business we are always left with a small surplus of meals at the end of each day.
“These meals would normally be sent to our Nethergate store to be sold individually however due to the current lockdown and the closure of our Nethergate shop we are unable to do this and thought instead of trying to sell these meals we want them going to those who need them the most at this very difficult time.”
Dundee’s Tayview Hotel has also announced that they would be providing free food to key workers such as NHS staff, police, fire and rescue crews, teachers and council staff, as well as to vulnerable people.
