Carers at a Dundee home are battling a coronavirus outbreak feared to have affected half the residents living in one part of the building.
Five residents and four staff have tested positive for Covid-19 at the Lochleven Care Home in Broughty Ferry.
There are a further seven suspected cases among residents in the 25-bed unit within the home, which has an overall capacity for 100 people.
A total of 19 staff are self-isolating at home due to personal or household symptoms.
The different units inside the home are separated by doors in the corridors. There are keypad locks so a secure code is required to move between them.
The details of the outbreak come after health secretary Jeane Freeman confirmed earlier this week Covid-19 is present in around a third of care homes in Scotland.
A whistleblower, who asked not to be named, highlighted concerns about the way the outbreak has been managed at the Thistle Healthcare run facility.
They said the outbreak was “something that should be known.”
All of the rooms are en-suite in the home, which specialises in helping those living with dementia
A Lochleven care home spokesman said: “Several weeks ago we introduced stringent measures to protect the safety and well-being of our residents and staff, which is our absolute priority at all times and especially now.
“All residents have their own rooms, which allows us to limit contact with others very effectively.”
He confirmed the home has personal protective equipment and staff are using it when working with residents.
Management have put in a range of measures, including daily staff symptom checks, ensuring staff stay away from work if they have mild symptoms and preventing routine visits from friends and family.
The team have also put in place staggered access to staff areas, upgraded cleaning practices focused on “high touch” areas and are closely monitoring hand washing and the use of hand sanitiser.
“Our staff are doing an exceptional job in very difficult circumstances, and are working very hard to protect the well-being of the residents in their care.
“We’d like to extend our sincere appreciation to each one of them and to the families of our residents for their support and understanding,” the spokesman added.
Details of the outbreak come after coronavirus was confirmed in a number of Dundee care homes, including Forebank Care Home in the Hilltown and Redwood House care home, also in Broughty Ferry.
Meanwhile, Vicky Irons, chief officer for Dundee Health and Social Care Partnership, has highlighted joint working at three Tayside health and social care partnerships to secure a 70% drop in the number of patients waiting to leave hospital.
The patients have either been supported to move home, or into care homes, freeing up hospital beds.
