The Chinese community in Dundee has raised nearly £9,000 for NHS Tayside.
Appeal organisers have also ordered a supply of masks, which they had intended to provide for use by frontline medics.
However, the items do not meet the rigorous standards laid down by the NHS and now it is hoped care homes or other facilities might be able to use them.
Yanyang Laird, head teacher of Dundee Chinese School, said she had not expected people to raise the £8,745 they did, more than doubling their previous £3,940 fundraiser for China.
She said: “The Chinese community in Dundee really came together to help the NHS.
“We are still waiting for a lot of masks to be delivered, and we will have to pay for customs duty, but whatever is left from the cash after that will go directly to Ninewells.
“The total is even more than what we previously raised to send to China. Dundee is really our second home and we love it here and want to be a part of the community.
“It’s a good amount of money. With all the businesses closed, I really didn’t think we would be able to raise as much as we did.”
The FFP2 masks bought can not be accepted by the NHS because of Health Protection Scotland guidelines.
Dundee’s Chinese communities have bought other masks which are acceptable and awaiting their arrival before donating them to Ninewells.
The World Health Organisation says the use of FFP2 masks is safe in other settings and Ms Laird hopes they can find someone to take the batch so they do not go to waste.
UK government advice stated the masks can be used “if FFP3 are not available”.
Dundee’s Chinese community has had to deal with suspected racist incidents in recent months, with a window broken at the Wing Fung supermarket on Trades Lane earlier this year.
Police patrols were stepped up in the area after a second incident days later.
It is thought the incidents were linked to the coronavirus epidemic.
Ms Laird added: “We do feel the pressure of the racism that’s been happening since the outbreak.
“People have been making coughing noises in some Chinese people’s direction as they pass and other things like that.
“But we just want to help.”
