A team of pharmacists in Dundee have been leading work to provide specialist medicines across Scotland.
The Ninewells-based Scotland Pharmaceutical Specials Service (PSS) and Tayside Pharmaceuticals have been providing medicine such as antibiotics, steroids and inhalers for coronavirus assessment centres all over the country.
They have supplied more than 35,000 packs of medication in the last month and have a further 125,000 packs ready for distribution.
The team is putting out around three times as many packets than in a normal month and are now working on products for child patients and for palliative care at home.
Tayside Pharmaceuticals have also manufactured a saccharin solution for testing the fit of PPE face masks and has supplied thousands of bottles to health boards across Scotland and trusts in England and Wales.
Dr Baxter Millar, head of NHS Scotland Pharmaceutical ‘Specials’ Service, said, “None of this work could have been achieved without the full support of all of our staff.
“The teams have worked exceptionally long hours and over weekends to significantly increase production. I could not have asked for a more committed response and I am immensely proud of the teams.”
