A “beautiful” video tribute to intensive care staff at Ninewells has left the team at the hospital “touched” and “humble’” a senior doctor has said.
ICU doctor Dr Pauline Austin said the team had seen the video made by Shaheena Din, whose father Abdul Rashid Daud recently died from coronavirus while in the hospital.
The video – in which three generations of the family hold up cards thanking the team for the elderly man’s care over his final days – has now been seen by more than 30,000 people on social media.
Dr Austin said: “We have seen Shaheena Din’s beautiful video and I would like, on behalf of the team in ICU, to say thank you to Shaheena and her family.
“It is hard to put into words what we felt as we were so incredibly touched that Shaheena and her family would at this very sad time thank us.
“It made us all feel really humble.”
The family’s video tribute was sparked by an earlier video made by the Ninewell’s team.
Members of the hospital’s Critical Care group have been making films for the families of those who are unable, due to coronavirus restrictions, to visit their loved ones in person when they are very sick.
Dr Austin added: “The team decided to do this video to show the people of Tayside that if their loved ones were admitted to the Intensive Care Unit at Ninewells they would be surrounded by a team that would provide the highest quality care for them.”
She said the team were aware that it was distressing for people to be unable to visit their family members in the unit at present.
“The whole team were involved in the making the video and they hoped that by doing this small thing that it would bring a little comfort to families who would be sitting at home worried,” she added.
Shaheena told The Courier the strong public reaction to her family’s video had taken them all by surprise.
“We didn’t expect the amount of notice it has received,” she said.
“It is really not about us.
“My father was quite a private person but we wanted to get the message out about what the NHS team had done for him,” she added.
