The plug was pulled on a Dundee carnival just hours before it was set to open.
Horne’s Pleasure Fairs had been due to welcome thrill seekers to Caird Park on Thursday evening, but organisers were forced to put out a statement in the afternoon announcing it would not be going ahead as planned.
Dundee City Council said it was in discussions with the company.
Christian Horne — who runs the family business with his father Colin — said it was too soon to say when the carnival would open.
He said an announcement would be made on their Facebook page in due course.
“It’s unlikely we will be able to open before the weekend now. The council want to get everything 100% right so we’re doing some more paper work.
“They have to grant me the licence and the council want to be absolutely sure everything is in place. They’ve been very good to be fair to them. We’re working together to put everything right.”
Plans were originally in place for the fairground to open last month but those were pushed back when the Covid-19 outbreak in Coupar Angus and a handful of schools in Dundee came to light.
A variety of rides for all ages, including waltzers, carousels and more, have been set up.
Questions about the safety of hosting a carnival amid a pandemic have been circulating on social media but the company insists it is taking all necessary measures.
These include asking, although not insisting, that visitors wear face coverings outdoors, enhanced cleaning and using the NHS Track and Trace service.
Christian added: “We’ve set up an entrance and one-way system for social distancing. You’ll be allowed to go around more than once, but if everyone is going in one direction it helps.
“Once people are in, some of it is down to them to ensure social distancing is happening.
“We’re going to have to be dealing with this virus for some time to come so people need to feel it is not a shambles,” he added.
“It’s taken longer than we thought to even get where we are. We’re just trying to break even at the moment.”
A Dundee City Council spokesman said: “We are speaking to the company.”
