It’s been a while since we’ve heard pianist Joseph Fleetwood in concert and to show what we have been missing, he gave an excellent recital on Saturday lunchtime in St Paul’s Cathedral.
There’s a slight change to Joe. There’s a stronger maturity both in performance and in interpretation, traits that didn’t always manifest themselves. They do now to tremendous effect.
The choice of programme – Liszt, Beethoven and Chopin – was typical of the man. It accentuated on his forte, the flamboyant, electric and powerful but it also showed his softer side, one that didn’t always appear in performance. Now he can mix the moods perfectly.
The Liszt Love Songs are both passionate and sensitive, and Joe exploited each emotion perfectly. Joe ended with three Chopin waltzes.
All three are well-known and well-loved and part of the staple diet of pianists. His freshness of approach gave them even more appeal, with the last one living up to its name – Brillante.
