Asbestos has been discovered in council homes in Dundee during work to replace the buildings’ roofs.
Councillor John Alexander, the local authority’s neighbourhood services convener, said the material poses no risk to residents.
The council is spending £200,000 replacing the roofs of eight tenements on Balgarthno Road and Gourdie Road and the asbestos was discovered in water tanks during inspections before the work began.
Mr Alexander stressed this would not be harmful to residents but said the tanks would be completely removed by accredited asbestos contractors.
he said: “The council undertakes assessments prior to works beginning on site and is aware that these water tanks contain low-level asbestos.
“These tanks have not represented a risk to tenants and no one should be alarmed by this.
“It is standard practice that assessment of this nature are carried out and qualified staff are able to offer advice throughout the process.”
He also said the cost of removing and replacing the water tanks will not add to the cost of replacing the roofs.
Mr Alexander said: “Once again, there is no risk to residents and this work is generally very standard. These new roofs will no doubt be welcomed by residents and I am pleased to see that things are progressing.
“We are committed to improving the standard of stock,” he added.
