A member of the Irish parliament is set to address Dundee anti-austerity campaigners.
Mick Barry, who has sat in Dublin’s lower chamber for just a few months, will talk about his experiences of campaigning and politics in a meeting of the Scottish Trade Union and Socialists Coalition (TUSC) to be held on Friday.
He will be joined on stage by TUSC’s candidates for Dundee, Jim McFarlane and Leah Ganley.
Mr Barry has been involved in several campaigns during his political career, which began when he was elected as Cork councillor in 2004, including a recently successful attempt to defeat water charges in Ireland.
Mr Barry, who sits in an anti-austerity alliance, said he was delighted the charges had been suspended.
He said: “I’m very pleased to be bringing the news of a victory against austerity in Ireland to Scotland and to Dundee on Friday.
The lesson for us in Ireland was the same as that learned during the anti-poll tax movement in Scotland and Britain; that people power and a mass refusal to pay an unjust tax can deliver victories for working-class people.”
The talk begins at 7pm in the Queens Hotel.
