Two Dundee schools are set to introduce a project that uses scrap materials for imaginative play.
Play in a Pod is coming to the city’s St Joseph’s and Victoria Park primary schools .
The idea is to fill a “pod”, for example a shipping container, with safe scrap materials ranging from rubber tyres and plastic sheets to old plastic pipes, then let children use their imaginations when playing inside the pod.
A spokeswoman from Play on Wheels, who are delivering the project, said: “The main aim of POW is to offer freely chosen, unstructured play opportunities that are cost free for children and families.
“We work with local schools and community groups helping them to develop this type of play, we even support groups to have shipping containers filled with scrap.
“Not only does the project raise awareness about the amount of waste in the surrounding area but also the children are engaging with the concepts of re-use and re-cycling while playing creatively with scrap.
“Using such materials falls in line with the Scottish Government’s policy on play and early intervention for children.”
“Play in a Pod is designed to complement and enhance the Curriculum for Excellence and the Curriculum for Outdoor Learning. Our carefully devised ‘activity cards’ link specific activities using scrap resources to these curricula.”
