The chair of a Dundee high school’s parent council has backed The Courier’s Can It campaign.
Martin MacGregor, who leads St Paul’s Academy’s parent group, has said he believes schools need to do more to reduce consumption of high-caffeine energy drinks on their premises during school hours.
He said: “I can get behind the campaign that tries to discourage these drinks from school.
“You regularly see it happening. St Paul’s is right by the Asda, so you often see cans or half-empty cans of sugary drinks lying around.
“I think all schools across Dundee should take action to tackle it. These are not something we should be encouraging young people to drink.
“If you want to drink them out of school, that’s different.
“It wouldn’t be advisable for them to be drinking them in the quantities they do.”
He joins a long list of those advocating for Can It, including health secretary Shona Robison, Kirkcaldy High rector Derek Allan, and MSPs and MPs from across the political spectrum.
The latest votes of support piles additional pressure on schools across Courier Country to ban the drinks, following in the suit of Forfar Academy and Kirkcaldy High.
