Forth Ports wants Dundee to become Scotland’s main hub for decommissioning oil and gas rigs.
The company is currently upgrading Prince Charles Wharf and, when work is completed next year, it hopes to make Dundee the top destination in Scotland for decommissioning work.
SPeaking at yesterday’s ecojnomic summit, port manager David Webster said Dundee would be available to begin decommissioning work three years before Nigg Bay in Aberdeen.
Mr Webster added easier access to Dundee gives it an advantage over Forth Ports’ two other ports at Leith and Rosyth.
He said: “Leith has a lock entrance which is not ideal and Rosyth has a bridge so you can’t sail very large parts under it.
“Dundee doesn’t have either of those restrictions. We have a really good facility we can develop here.”
Mr Webster said the Port hopes to land renewables work but that progress but admitted progress has stalled because of legal issues.
“There is not a lot we can say about renewable projects as we have non-discloure agreements in place – but you can probably take that as quite positive – but nothing will move until the judicial process has run its course.”
