Members of the public will get the chance to see where world-leading research into cancer is being carried out in Dundee this week.
Dundee University’s Division of Cancer Research at Ninewells Hospital will welcome visitors keen to hear about its pioneering work at the Jacqui Wood Cancer Centre when it hosts its first ever open day from 10am to 3pm on Saturday.
Demonstrations, lab tours and talks from cancer researchers will introduce the variety of cancer-related activities taking place at the centre, which is a world-leader in the fight against cancer.
Dennis the Menace, the public face of the Ninewells Cancer Campaign, will welcome visitors to the centre and a variety of family-friendly activities will be on offer. These include lessons in how to make DNA from strawberries, salt and washing-up liquid and the chance to find out what skin looks like under a microscope.
Dr Colin Henderson, senior lecturer in the School of Medicine’s Division of Cancer Research, said: “We are delighted to open our doors to the public and to give local people the opportunity to experience a flavour of the world-leading research that we carry out in the Division of Cancer Research.
“We hope that our first open day will be fun as well as educational and informative, and look forward to welcoming visitors to the Jacqui Wood Cancer Centre.”
The Division of Cancer Research focuses on biological and clinical cancer research with the aim of understanding the biological and behavioural mechanisms underlying cancer sp ot cam improve the prevention and treatment of the disease.
