Participants in the Dundee Cyclathon will help support families fighting terminal illnesses this autumn.
The Rotary Club of Claverhouse, which organises the 26-mile event, has partnered with Marie Curie for this year’s ride.
In advance of the cyclathon, the rotary and Marie Curie have urged people to sign up for the family-friendly ride which will be held on September 11.
Petra McMillan, a Marie Curie patron, who lives in Carnoustie, said: “Thanks to the Rotary Club of Claverhouse, we have a real opportunity to make a significant impact on the level of free nursing care we provide across the ‘DD’ postcode this autumn.
“This is a fun event, suitable for all the family and those of all ages and abilities. I’d urge anyone with a bike to get involved and help us support our wonderful nurses working out in our communities.”
The cycling event is now in its 15th year and has already raised over £250,000 for various charities.
Event organiser Ian Balgowan of the Rotary Club of Claverhouse hopes this year Marie Curie will reap the rewards when participants opt to raise sponsorship as part of their sporting challenge.
He said: “Marie Curie is a fantastic charity that helps the entire family who are working to help keep a loved one at home at the end of life.
“Be it cancer or any other terminal condition, Marie Curie nurses are out working across Dundee, Angus and Perthshire day and night, helping people be at home at the end, always for free.
“We very much value that care and that’s why we chose to support Marie Curie with the Dundee Cyclathon for 2016.”
The route, which attracts hundreds of participants each year, begins and ends at Camperdown Park and follows the Green Circular cycle route.
Though entrants are not obligated to fundraise, it is hoped many will raise vital funds for the charity.
Petra was the first person to sign up for the event, and secured entry number ‘001’.
She said: “I was born in Dundee and I have a great affection for the city, it will be fantastic seeing it from a bike. I’ll just be taking it easy and enjoying the great atmosphere with the crowds.”
