Dundee FC are being linked with a possible move away from Dens Park, their home for the last 117 years.
The land at Camperdown identified as their possible new home was put on the market with an asking price of offers over £2 million in January last year.
The site has lain vacant since 1995 and plans to develop it have fallen through on more than one occasion.
Belfast-based Vico Properties, who ultimately sold the land to the Dens Park owners, submitted an application in 2010 to create two 18-hole adventure golf courses, a garden centre, three restaurants and three leisure units.
However, the plans fell through despite permission to knock down the B-listed former entrance hall of Van Leer factory being granted.
The building, built in 1946, is still on site and although in severe disrepair permission would still have to be granted to demolish it if plans for a new stadium proceed.
The factory built adding machines and was the first in Scotland to be occupied by an American company after the war.
Bags were later manufactured on the site but it closed for good in 1995.
It was earmarked for a £19 million leisure development in 1996, but only the ice arena was built and the factory has lain empty and open to the elements since.
Further hope for the site came when Camperdown Country Park formed part of Dundee City Council’s bid to have the national performance centre for sport built in the city.
Although the plans seemed promising at first, Dundee eventually lost out to Edinburgh.
Mark Jones, from selling agents Cushman and Wakefield, confirmed a sale of the land was concluded “in the last couple of weeks”.
