A former church near the centre of Dundee has been granted planning permission to be transformed into a bar and restaurant.
Blackscroft Property Company submitted an application last year to convert the former St Roque’s Episcopal Church, including an outdoor seating area.
Dundee City Council officers have now given the plans the green light.
The building sits next to the well-known former Reading Rooms nightclub.
The upper ground floor level of the church on Blackscroft will provide indoor seating for approximately 12 tables under the proposals.
The outdoor part of the site will see a grassed area between Blackscroft and Foundry Lane transformed into a decking area with a further 12 outdoor tables.
More bars, cafés and restaurants across Dundee have adopted al fresco dining due to coronavirus rules previously allowing for later opening hours.
Decking area with canopy
The decking area has permission for a canopy, providing shelter for patrons.
Restrictions include a ban on playing amplified music in the venue.
The church has a storied history, having previously been a distribution warehouse, an office machine centre and commercial offices.
In 2014, plans were submitted to turn the building into a children’s nursery, however, the application was refused by Dundee City Council, a decision which was appealed but later upheld in 2016.
It was then proposed in 2017 that the building be reverted back to its original use by St Roque’s Episcopal Church, but this never came to fruition.
Dundee-based developer Blackscroft is also behind the transformation of the former Reading Rooms nightclub.
Director Derek Souter had hoped to open the former Reading Rooms as a new pub in March last year but the building needed more work than originally thought, at the same time as the coronavirus pandemic hit.
