A Dundee woman has criticised Tesco after claims the retailer has refused to deliver goods to the block of flats where her autistic son stays.
Varie Parker says she has been told by the supermarket it will not deliver to Henry’s Fintry home because he lives in a “gated community”.
That is despite other firms reportedly offering a delivery service to the site – which Varie says is like any normal block of flats.
Tesco has yet to offer any full explanation about the issue to either Varie or The Courier.
‘Tesco’s competitors are delivering to the flats’
Varie said: “This is a block of flats in Fintry like any other. It has a buzzer and both Asda and Iceland deliver.
“Henry is autistic and he is very particular about where he gets his shopping – he knows all the products at Tesco.
“We signed him up for the ‘delivery saver’ service and paid £7.99 a month starting from last month.
“When I put in Henry’s address it wasn’t coming up and they initially informed me it was a ‘gated community’, but I explained their competitors were delivering there.
“Staff said to me on the phone they were going to investigate it further but they’ve never provided me with a response.”
Varie says delivery services from supermarkets “should be able to support those that are most vulnerable”.
She added: “He can’t go out shopping on his own and it isn’t part of the support workers’ jobs to be lugging bags of shopping around – that’s why the delivery service was a great option.
‘I’ve yet to get any sort of explanation’
“The only thing I can assume is that Tesco are looking at a system, perhaps like Royal Mail, to come to this ‘gated community’ theory.
“I just wish they would go and look at the block and quickly discover it is like any other block of flats.
“Weeks have now gone by and I’m yet to get any sort of explanation.”
Tesco has yet to respond to repeated requests for comment.
