Staff at a Dundee shop have been “overwhelmed” by the generosity of customers after their tips jar holding 80 was taken by a customer.
Last month the Tele published shocking images from a CCTV camera of a customer buying an ice cream before taking the tips jar and putting it in her bag as the shop assistant put her money in the cash register.
The pot was estimated to have been holding about 80 for the staff’s next night out, and they were all left devastated when it disappeared.
But since the incident, staff have been bowled over by the generosity of the public donating cash with one mystery man handing over 80 to replace the lost tips.
Sheree Birse, manager at Redberry, said: “There was one man who actually handed in 80, which is what was probably in the cup at the time it’s unbelievable.
“About half an hour later another person came in and handed us 25, and with all the other donations I think we’ve got about 145, which is just incredible.
“Some people have even come in to hand over money without buying anything.
“All of the cash will be used for our next staff night out so we just want to say thank you for all the kind-hearted people who have helped us we’re all just overwhelmed by their generosity.
“So we’re saving all this cash up for our night out on the 11th which we can’t wait for now.”
At the time of the incident, Redberry supervisor Mark Gibson told how staff noticed the jar had gone 10 minutes after the customer was in the shop.
He said: “When we watched it back on the video we were all shocked. We’re now going to chain our tips jar to the counter. It’s a bit sad that we’re having to do that, but we’ve no choice.”
The incident took place on September 16 at about 7.30pm.
A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said officers were following a positive line of inquiry in relation to it.
