Drunk man threatened to beat dog before walking into oncoming traffic near Dundee school

A drunken man threatened to beat a dog before walking in the middle of the road and into oncoming traffic near a Dundee school.

David Valerio, 42, of Durisdeer Drive, Hamilton, had sentence deferred until June 6. Dundee Sheriff Court heard it was mid afternoon on November 21 last year when Valerio was first spotted.

Fiscal depute Joanne Smith said: “A witness was in a nearby school and heard shouting and swearing coming from Baxter Park Terrace.

“The witness looked over and saw the accused shouting at members of the public and walking into the road, into the path of oncoming cars.”

Valerio was then seen by witnesses to jump on the back of a passing male member of the public.

Staff at nearby Morgan Academy, Forfar Road, contacted police.

The fiscal continued: “A dog walker passed and the dog started barking at the accused, to which he replied ‘if that dog comes near me, I’ll beat it’. The dog walker replied, ‘if you beat my dog, I’ll beat you’.”

Police arrived and Valerio instantly began shouting and swearing at them and refused to desist when asked to do so.

He was arrested and taken to police headquarters.

Solicitor Jim Laverty said Valerio had been drinking heavily at the time of the offence.

He admitted a charge of abusive behaviour, at Pitkerro Road and Baxter Park Terrace, on November 21 last year.
