Dundee teen who ‘suffers from rejection’ jailed for repeated driving offences

A teenager has been locked up after admitting driving while banned.

Calvin Burnett, of Salton Crescent, pleaded guilty to driving a car while disqualified on Milton of Craigie Road on October 17.

Burnett was also banned from driving for nine years.

The 19-year-old has previous convictions for driving offences.

Solicitor Mike Short told Dundee Sheriff Court the teenager struggled to stay away from the wheel – despite previously being banned from the road.

He told Sheriff John Rafferty: “He’s a very complex young man and I would like my lordship to give him the opportunity to work with the Venture Trust about his problem, which is his desire to drive.

“At 19, I do find he is immature but I believe he suffers from rejection and always has done.

“Some of the young men who come through this court are just bad or lost causes but he is neither of those.”

Passing sentence, Sheriff Rafferty told Burnett: “Since 2016 you have driven while disqualified.

“It must be marked by the court that if court orders are breached then a custodial sentence is likely.

“It is to punish you, to deter others from breaching court orders and also to protect the public. I hope that you reflect on matters and have a steely determination when liberated.”

Burnett was sentenced to nine months detention, backdated to October 19.
