Man raped woman as she slept in Dundee home before ‘putting her trousers back on’

A rapist who claimed he wanted his victim to take her accusations to the police has been remanded in custody.

Thomas Hughes, 35, indecently assaulted a sleeping woman at a house in Dundee before going on to rape her.

When detectives turned up to detain him, Hughes made an unprompted comment before officers could caution him that he did not have to say anything.

One officer noted him as saying: “She was out of it. I had sex with her then I put her trousers back on.”

A colleague recorded it as: “She was absolutely wasted.

“She had been taking cannabis the night before.

“I had sex with her, pulled her trousers back up and put her back to bed.”

Hughes, whose address was given care of a house on Helmsdale Avenue, denied sexually assaulting and raping the woman who was asleep and incapable of giving or withholding consent when on June 23 last year at a trial at the High Court in Edinburgh, but was found guilty of the crime.

The court heard that Hughes had contact with the victim through social media and phone calls after the attack and at one point told her: “I have explained that what I did was wrong.”

Hughes said: “On a number of occasions I was telling her to go to the police but she still continues to barrage me with calls and text messages.”

He told advocate depute Ashley Edwards that he had wanted the woman to go to the police.

Lord Summers remanded Hughes in custody and placed him on the sex offenders register.

He called for the preparation of a background report on him ahead of sentencing at the High Court in Glasgow on November 15.
