Police find cannabis plants worth £3,000 hanging from coat hangers in Dundee flat

Police found cannabis plants worth £3,000 hanging from coat hangers inside a Dundee flat which was being used as a drugs farm.

Sean Finnan, 28, was using a flat on Strathmartine Road to grow the Class B drug, Dundee Sheriff Court heard.

The farm was uncovered on December 3 when police were called following complaints of loud music coming from the flat.

Fiscal depute Sue Ruta said: “The night-time noise team attended at 12.40am and heard loud music coming from the flat.

“They knocked several times but there was no reply or sign of life inside.

“A joiner forced entry at 1.25am. There was immediately a strong smell of cannabis.”

She told the court that a black bag with cannabis buds and plant pots were found in the living room, as well as drug paraphernalia.

The fiscal continued: “A large black tent was found with a large amount of cannabis plants hanging from coat hangers and cannabis buds drying on screens.

“The premises were re-secured and a calling card placed on the door.

“At noon the drug enforcement team attended, searched the property and seized all drug–related items.”

Ms Ruta said that at 2am the following day Finnan went to police headquarters and handed himself in.

In reply to being cautioned and charged, Finnan said: “It’s my house.

“It’s all my equipment, it’s all my stuff they were using.”

The drugs tested positive for cannabis and had an as-seen value of £3,000.

Finnan, of Loons Road, admitted producing a controlled drug, namely cannabis, a Class B drug, at a property on Strathmartine Road on December 3.

Solicitor Jim Laverty said: “At this stage I would be asking your lordship to defer sentencing for social work reports and a restriction of liberty assessment, and to address your lordship when those are available.”

Sentence was deferred until November 12 for reports and assessments.
