William Stuppart, 37, of Tweed Crescent, appeared in private on petition.
Stuppart is charged with having a knife on St Andrews Street on Sunday, and with assaulting Mark Cussick by chasing him along the street and striking him on his neck with a knife, to his severe injury and permanent disfigurement.
He made no plea or declaration and the case was continued for inquiries. Stuppart was remanded in custody.
