Good Samaritan stabbed outside Dundee takeaway after challenging rude thug

A Good Samaritan was stabbed in the street outside a takeaway after challenging a thug who was being rude to staff.

Mark Allan, 46, launched a vicious assault on Craig Cosgrove outside Khans takeaway on Brook Street, Broughty Ferry.

Allan was inside the kebab shop and was being unpleasant towards staff, fiscal depute Lynne Mannion told Dundee Sheriff Court.

Mr Cosgrove, 32, stepped in to challenge him over his behaviour and Allan asked if he wanted a “square go”.

“He produced a knife and Mr Cosgrove kicked out at him,” the fiscal depute said.

The pair then fought in the street and Mr Cosgrove received several cuts to his hand, face and neck.

Ms Mannion said Allan kicked Mr Cosgrove on the head and body several times and struck him with the knife – leaving him seriously injured.

The court heard that CCTV showed Allan raining blows on Mr Cosgrove before his victim fought back and got Allan on the ground before hitting him.

Witnesses intervened and the police were called.

Mr Cosgrove was taken to Ninewells Hospital for treatment, where he received stitches for his wounds, Ms Mannion added.

Speaking after the court hearing, Mr Cosgrove said: “I’m pleased the man has pleaded guilty. I go out in Broughty Ferry regularly – I was outside the takeaway when the guy was being rude to staff and I asked him why he was doing this.

“He pulled out a Stanley blade. I’ve been left with permanent scarring to my hands and face.

“The incident is always playing in the back of my mind.

“You’re always looking over your shoulder.”

Mr Cosgrove added: “I’m glad people were able to come to my assistance – I didn’t really feel the pain until the next day.

“I was working offshore and was able to recover during my leave but it was a terrifying experience.”

Allan pleaded guilty to a charge of assault to severe injury and permanent disfigurement on August 28, 2017.

Sheriff Alastair Brown deferred sentence until July 9 and released Allan on bail meantime.
