Celtic ace Leigh Griffiths cites ‘childcare issues’ to put Dundee speeding trial on hold

Celtic ace Leigh Griffiths’ court case had to be kicked into the new season today – after a court heard “childcare issues” meant the father-of-five had to leave court early.

The Hoops star was due to face trial today accused of driving his four-litre, 469 horsepower, Mercedes AMG C63 at 62mph on Dundee’s Kingsway on June 3 last year.

But the case at Dundee Justice of the Peace court had to be adjourned after Griffiths’ lawyer told the court his “childcare arrangements had fallen through” and he had to pick one of his kids up at school at midday.

His solicitor also told the court he couldn’t attend a potential second day of the trial tomorrow because he is set to undergo an operation to cure niggling calf problems.

Griffiths spoke only to confirm his name during a two minute hearing.

Fiscal depute Alan Kempton said the Crown did not oppose an adjournment and asked that a trial date – the third to be set in the case since it first called last November – be fixed in August.

JP Paul Cameron adjourned the case and ordered Griffiths to appear in court again on August 9 – a day after the first leg of the Champions League third qualifying round in which Celtic will hope to be playing.

The charge against Griffiths alleges that on June 3 2017 at Kingsway West, Dundee, near the Myrekirk roundabout, Griffiths drove at 62mph in a 50mph zone.

Just seven days later Griffiths netted two stunning free kicks to put Scotland into a late lead against England at Hampden.

But a Harry Kane strike deep into injury time meant the game finished 2-2.
