Jamie Petrie, 30, of Ballantrae Terrace, Dundee, had sentence deferred for reports and a restriction of liberty order assessment.
Petrie had previously admitted that on September 22 last year, at an address in Lewis Terrace, he assaulted his ex-partner Diane Gray, seized her by the throat, pinned her to the ground and restricted her breathing to her injury.
He also admitted breaching a bail condition by contacting Ms Gray on November 21, having been ordered not to contact or approach her.
Sentence was deferred until January 15 and he was granted bail.
