Colin Hughes, 24, of Dudhope Court, was ordered to undertake 190 hours of unpaid work as part of a community payback order.
Hughes admitted that on October 16, in Bell Street, he assaulted Gary Milne by knocking him to the ground and repeatedly punching and kicking him on the head, to his injury.
The court heard Hughes and his friends had been drinking and he had intervened in a fight between two of them and “went too far”.
