A thief who broke into a Specsavers shop was identified after leaving a shoe behind.
Drug addict Douglas Laidlaw, 37, of Soapwork House, Soapwork Lane, admitted at Dundee Sheriff Court to breaking into Specsavers, 53 Murraygate, on August 27 and taking spectacles, an iPad, coins and a lens case.
Fiscal depute Charmaine Gilmartin told the court police noted there was a large hole in the door. There was blood on the glass and frame of the door and on the front step.
CCTV showed the accused kicking at the door several times, repeatedly trying to pull the glass panel up with his hands and then him crawling through the hole he made in the glass.
When Laidlaw returned to the homeless unit, police saw he was extremely under the influence of a substance and was wearing no sock or shoe on his left foot.
His left ankle was swollen and he had cuts on his right hand and blood on both his hands and he was found with a pair of glasses and a lens case which had been stolen from the shop.
At the shop a white Nike left-foot trainer was found, which matched the trainer he was wearing when he was arrested.
Ms Gilmartin said the break in cost an estimated £10,000.
Sheriff Alastair Brown deferred sentence until December 14 for reports and remanded Laidlaw in custody.
