Dundee man threw bottle at ‘on-off’ partner in row

A man who had just learned his “on-off” partner was seeing another man angrily threw a bottle in her direction, causing a head injury, Dundee Sheriff Court heard.

Darren McKinney, 26, of Findowrie Street, Dundee, admitted that he culpably or recklessly threw a bottle which struck Zoe Boyd on the head to her injury at Law Road in the city on August 26.

The court heard the pair had previously been in a relationship but they were now separated.

They had been on separate nights out and McKinney repeatedly tried to contact Ms Boyd into the early hours of the morning.

At 8.30am, the pair met at Law Road and McKinney was shouting at her. She ran into the garden and McKinney ran after her, then threw the bottle which struck her on the head then smashed on the ground.

She required treatment in hospital for a minor laceration.

Solicitor John Boyle told the court McKinney thought they were still in a relationship and had just been told she had been out with another man.

“He threw a bottle over the hedge in anger, he didn’t intend to hit her,” said Mr Boyle.

Sheriff Lorna Drummond deferred sentence until September 25 for reports and granted bail on condition that McKinney does not approach or contact Ms Boyd, nor enter Law Road.
