A man confronted police officers with a seven-inch knife after a dispute — moments after he’d approached a neighbour with another blade.
Police officers Scott Peters and Scott Hosking were at Rory McPhee’s home attempting to resolve a dispute, when he went into the kitchen and returned with the weapon in his hand — and lifted it in the air.
PC Hosking tackled him with CS spray, and the officers disarmed McPhee before arresting him, Dundee Sheriff Court heard.
The 57-year-old, of Glenmoy Terrace, Forfar, had earlier that day been involved in an argument with his former partner over retrieving items from a house.
When McPhee confronted a passenger in her car, neighbour Steven Napier intervened and began to shout at him from his window. An argument developed and McPhee went into his house and returned a short time later with a case containing a knife.
He then removed the knife from the case and approached Mr Napier’s window, before returning inside.
Police were called to the scene and found McPhee shouting in the street, the court was told.
They calmed him down and retrieved that knife, only for McPhee to confront them with another blade.
McPhee admitted having a knife in a public place at Glenmoy Terrace on August 4 last year.
He also admitted a separate charge of behaving in a threatening or abusive manner by shouting, swearing and acting in a threatening manner towards a teenager and attempting to enter a vehicle he was in, at the same location on the same date.
McPhee further admitted approaching Mr Napier’s open window while in possession of a knife, as well as struggling with the officers.
Sheriff George Way deferred sentence until July 10 for reports.
He said: “I am concerned about the situation with police officers who have appeared to have calmed someone down and this occurs.
“It seems quite hard to explain what was going on in his head, that he was prepared to confront two kitted-up officers with a knife.”
An agent acting on behalf of McPhee said there he had a “history of mental health difficulties”.
