A man has been banned from keeping dogs for 10 years after his out-of-control pet attacked a woman.
Dundee Sheriff Court heard Christopher Doig’s Staffordshire bull terrier Butch left neighbour Sheila Brand, 35, permanently disfigured.
Doig, 41, of Balgarthno Terrace, told police that the dog “goes for anything”, and had previously received a warning in July 2014 after Butch savagely attacked another dog.
Fiscal despite Eilidh Robertson told the court Butch attacked Ms Brand in her own garden.
The fiscal said: “Around 5.45pm the complainer and her dog Spike, a Golden Retriever, were playing on decking in her back garden.
“She heard a noise and then saw that Butch had bitten Spike and had a hold of him by the ear.
“Ms Brand ran towards the dogs and tried to pull Butch off Spike.
“As she did this, Butch bit her hand.” Doig pulled Butch off Ms Brand, who was bleeding heavily, and apologised to her.
She was taken to A&E at Ninewells Hospital and received surgery for suspected tendon damage and stitches to the wound.
Ms Brand now has a scar on her hand as a result of the attack.
Police dealing with the case later formed the opinion that Doig “couldn’t care less”.
The dog was taken away from Doig on May 5 and kept in police custody before it was ordered to be put down.
After admitting the offence, Sheriff Alastair Brown said: “The bottom line is that this dog was dangerously out of control.
“When Ms Brand intervened she was severely and permanently disfigured.”
Sheriff Brown placed Doig on a three-month restriction of liberty order, confining him to his home address between 7pm and 7am daily.
