Man threatened to kill Dundee police officers

A man has admitted threatening to kill police officers in Dundee after a row about the return of his computer.

Fraser Waddell, 20, had been due to go on trial at Dundee Sheriff Court having originally denied the offence but changed his plea to guilty.

The court heard he made threats to kill officers and said he would personally seek out Detective Constable Craig Kelly, who he had a grievance against.

The officer had obtained Waddell’s computer equipment as part of a probe into an unrelated matter.

Waddell called Police Scotland’s Dundee headquarters in Bell Street and asked to speak to the detective.

Fiscal depute Trina Sinclair said: “A call was received at Bell Street and the accused asked to be transferred to DC Kelly.

“The accused said he was using his work telephone.

“He asked about the return of computer equipment and DC Kelly advised him it was still in the care of police for examination.

“On hearing that, the accused became angry and told DC Kelly he had sought legal advice and was going to sue Police Scotland.

“He then shouted that he was going to start killing officers.

“He was asked by DC Kelly to repeat what he had said and he said it again.

“He then said ‘I’ll come down there and see you personally’ and that he was going to ‘sort things out’.

“DC Kelly perceived this to be threatening and alerted his supervisor.”

The officer and his colleague listened to the call again and identified the voice as Waddell’s.

As he was being cautioned and charged, he said: “How can I phone someone when I don’t have a phone?”

Waddell, of MacMillan Street, Larkhall, admitted that on June 24 this year at Police Scotland, Bell Street, he sent, by means of a public electronic communications network, a message to DC Kelly that was grossly offensive or of an indecent, obscene or menacing character, in that he threatened to kill police officers and to personally seek out DC Kelly.

Defending Waddell, lawyer Carolyn Leckie said: “My client wishes to offer sincere apologies to the complainer, the witnesses in the matter and to the court.”

Sheriff John Rafferty deferred sentenced until January 16 for reports.
