Drink-driver’s slow Dundee city centre pursuit

Drink-driver’s slow Dundee city centre pursuit

A drunken driver led police on a slow pursuit through Dundee city centre — after getting behind the wheel while more than four times the legal limit.

Officers tried to get Steven Moran, 40, to pull over but he carried on driving unaware of their presence.

Dundee Sheriff Court heard Moran was driving so slowly that traffic behind the pursuing police car was held up.

Moran, of Milnbank Road, only stopped his vehicle when he suffered a puncture.

Fiscal depute Sue Ruta said police had been made aware of Moran driving off from Dean Avenue while under the influence at 10pm on September 17.

The fiscal said: “Ten minutes later two police officers on patrol on East Dock Street saw the accused’s Vauxhall Corsa straddling the centre line of the carriageway. The officers followed the accused to Marketgait in a marked police vehicle.

“Due to the manner of his driving and the earlier call to police, the officers activated blue flashing lights in an attempt to stop him but the accused continued to drive onto East Marketgait.

“Further attempts were made to stop the accused when officers activated their siren.

“The accused was driving at a very low speed, causing other drivers to slow, but he still failed to stop.”

Moran eventually stopped his car on the carriageway at Ladywell roundabout. Police approached and gave him a roadside breath test, which he failed. Moran was arrested and taken to police headquarters where he gave a reading of more than four times the legal drink drive limit.

Solicitor Stuart Hamilton, defending, said: “To say he is appalled at his actions is an understatement — he is very much against drink driving.

“He normally abstains from alcohol but went out with his sister.

“There have been family issues which neither of them have been coping very well with and they got into an argument and he got into his car to drive home.

“He says it was totally out of character.”

Moran admitted that on September 17, at East Dock Street and North Marketgait, he drove a car with 91 mics of alcohol in 100ml of breath.

Sentence was deferred until December 12 for medical reports and Moran was disqualified from driving meantime.
