A MAN has been charged over an alleged attack with a spade and a screwdriver on a Dundee city centre street.
Police were called to Nicoll Street, just off Ward Road, on Monday following reports of an assault.
Steven Gill, 34, has since been charged in connection with the alleged attack.
Gill, of Nethergate, appeared in private at the city’s sheriff court.
He made no plea or declaration in relation to three charges on petition.
Gill is charged with assaulting Colin Higgins by repeatedly striking him on the head and body with a screwdriver and a spade, to his injury, on Monday, at Nicoll Street.
He faces a further two charges of having offensive weapons — namely a screwdriver and a spade — without reasonable excuse or lawful authority, on the same date and at the same location.
The case was continued for further investigation.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing a number of police units racing towards the city centre at the time of Monday’s alleged attack.
One local said that four police vans had been spotted at the scene, while another told the Tele that up to seven units were seen heading down Victoria Road with blue lights flashing and sirens going around the time of the incident.
Another person reported seeing a bloodied man near the scene.
Officers were called to attend Nicoll Street just before noon and the road was shut off as they dealt with the matter.
A Police Scotland spokeswoman confirmed that it had received a report of a man being assaulted.
The man was said to have been taken to Ninewells Hospital following the incident.
The spokeswoman also confirmed that a man had been detained following the alleged attack.
The alleged victim was said to be in a stable condition in hospital.
The most recent police figures for Dundee show a rise in serious and common assaults in the city.
There were 97 serious assaults in the first nine months of this year (2015/16), compared to 76 the year before.
Common assault numbers rose from 1,530 to 1,728 over the course of the same period.
But there were fewer people reported for having offensive weapons.
