A drunken 16-year-old boy who held a machete to a taxi driver’s neck has been locked up.
The youth, from Dundee — who cannot be named for legal reasons — was sentenced at Dundee Sheriff Court to 292 days detention.
The court previously heard the incident took place when the boy refused to pay a taxi fare. A second 16-year-old boy then grabbed Mohammad Azbar’s money bag as both youths ran out of the taxi.
Fiscal depute Eilidh Robertson told the court the incident happened shortly after one of the boys arrived at a house party on Mossgeil Crescent with a machete.
He and another 16-year-old boy then got into a taxi and the driver, who believed they were under the influence of alcohol, told them if they didn’t pay the fare he would take them to the police station.
The fiscal said: “One of the boys brandished the machete and held it up to the neck of the driver who immediately stopped the vehicle and ran out, calling out to passersby for help.”
Both boys ran back to the party.
The first accused admitted having a machete, at Mossgeil Crescent, Pitkerro Road, and elsewhere on November 7 last year. And he admitted brandishing a machete at Mr Azbar on Pitkerro Road, on the same date.
The second accused admitted stealing a bag containing £50 cash from Mr Azbar, while within a taxi on Pitkerro Road, on the same date.
He was ordered to complete 120 hours of unpaid work and placed under 18 months supervision.
And he was placed on a three month curfew confining him to his home address between 7pm and 7am daily.
