Woman jailed after throwing soiled sanitary towel at Dundee police officer

A “disgusting” woman was today jailed after she assaulted a cop by throwing a soiled sanitary towel at her.

Nicola McPhee launched the attack after she was detained over an alleged stabbing.

She was taken to cell 38 at Dundee police HQ where a strip search was ordered.

McPhee took off her clothes then removed the sanitary towel and launched it at PC Erin Gunn, hitting her on the upper chest.

Fiscal depute Vicki Bell told a jury at Dundee Sheriff Court: “The Crown’s position is that this was deliberate — the defence say it was an accident.

“She was hostile to the police — she seemed angry. She was asked to remove her clothing and underwear — she was never asked to remove the sanitary towel. She did that of her own volition.

“The officers says she threw it overhand — and the officers were of the view that she meant to throw it.”

“It is quite disgusting what landed on the officer’s clothing. The initial reaction would be to say sorry – if it is an accident she might apologise.

“At no point was she sorry in her evidence.”

McPhee, 29, a prisoner at HMP Edinburgh, denied a charge of police assault on indictment but a jury found her guilty.

The offence took place on August 7 this year.

Sheriff Alistair Carmichael said McPhee would be jailed for seven months, but taking into account the time she has spent on remand that was reduced to one month and two weeks from today.

He said: “The procurator fiscal when questioning you described you as disgusting — and I agree with that description.”
