The owners of the Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant in Dundee city centre were fined £3,200 at the sheriff court today.
The fine was issued after Scotco Eastern Ltd – which is the umbrella firm for KFC franchises in the UK – admitted unsatisfactory conditions within their Dundee outlet, on High Street.
Beetles and larvae were found on the floor of the kitchen and office areas, and flies were found at the front food servery area.
Fiscal depute Trina Sinclair said: “A member of the public put in a complaint on September 14 last year and environmental health officers attended later that day and found the situation, which they were not happy with.”
Grease and food debris was also found on the floor at food preparation areas and a burst pipe was found to have been unrepaired.
Advocate Barry Smith, defending, said: “The company accepts there were clearly problems with its Dundee premises and are putting that to right now.
“Extensive maintenance work and repair work has been carried out since and new pest control contractors have been employed.
“I’m told the premises are to be given a full refurbishment at a later date.
“Investigations have shown this was very much a localised problem and new management has been brought in.”
Scotco Eastern Limited, of Union Street, Aberdeen, admitted one charge under the Food Safety Act.
Sheriff George Way said: “The fact that this had to be brought to the attention of the company by a member of the public is not satisfactory.”
The company was given 28 days to pay the fine in full.
