Dundee man’s attack on partner caught on multis CCTV

A domestic abuser left his terrified partner cowering in the corner of a lift as he viciously attacked her.

Darren McMenemy, 32, shoved Mary Reid against a lift in Tulloch Court multi, knocking her head against the wall.

Miss Reid fell to the ground and tried to protect herself as McMenemy repeatedly kicked and punched her.

McMenemy then repeatedly took run-ups before kneeing and kicking her several times.

Fiscal depute Nicola Gillespie told Dundee Sheriff Court the incident happened at 11.10pm on April 11.

The fiscal said: “A concierge was watching CCTV of Tulloch Court and saw the accused and complainer approach the building. The relationship between the couple appeared fine at that point.

“They then got into the lift and the accused carried out an assault on Miss Reid. The accused pushed the complainer violently, causing her to fall to the ground.

“He then repeatedly kicked, punched, and kneed her while she was on the ground trying to protect herself.

“The concierge contacted police and numerous units attended.

“They were both traced outside the building and the complainer appeared to be trying to get away from the accused.

“She did not appear to be injured but had difficulty breathing and was seen by paramedics, although she was deemed fit and did not need medical treatment.”

McMenemy — who has previous convictions for domestic assault — wept as CCTV of the incident was shown in court. Solicitor, George Donnelly, defending, said: “He watched the CCTV and for the first time saw himself perpetrating an assault on his partner.

“In his own words he was disgusted and in my words he appeared filled with self-loathing.”

Mr Donnelly added that McMenemy has since sought counselling and help and support to change his behaviour.

McMenemy, a prisoner at Perth, admitted assaulting Mary Reid on April 11 at Tulloch Court.

Sheriff Brown said: “This was a vicious assault and had it not been for the steps described by your solicitor you’d be facing a very significant prison sentence. I may still impose that.” Sentence was deferred until August 14 for reports and McMenemy was remanded meantime.
