An engineer who punched a student and broke his jaw in a row over chips has been ordered to carry out unpaid work.
Thomas Forster, 21, of Seagate, was ordered to complete 140 hours of unpaid work and placed under one year’s supervision at Dundee Sheriff Court.
The court heard Forster left his victim, Matthew Reynolds, 24, unconscious and lying in the street after he punched him and ran off.
The attack followed an earlier incident inside Dundee University Student Union, when Mr Reynolds confronted Forster for “skipping the queue” for chips.
Fiscal depute Eilidh Robertson told the court Mr Reynolds was standing in the hot food queue around 2.30am on September 17 last year when Forster joined a group in front of him, asking one of them to “get him chips”.
The fiscal said: “The complainer took umbrage at the accused apparently skipping the queue and grabbed the accused by the collar.
“Both parties were separated by a member of staff.”
Both groups then left the Union, on Balfour Street, and Forster thereafter attacked Mr Reynolds.
Mr Reynolds was taken to Ninewells Hospital via ambulance and received treatment to a broken jaw, chipped tooth and a cut on his head.
Forster admitted that on September 17 last year, at Balfour Street, he assaulted Matthew Reynolds by punching him on the head, causing him to fall to the ground, whereby he was rendered unconscious, all to his severe injury.
Solicitor Ross Donnelly said: “He has shown how sorry and embarrassed he is about this since the outset.”
