A paedophile caught with a stash of more than 13,000 indecent images of children is appealing his sentence.
Former Abertay University student Anthony Sheridan, 35, was also caught with more than 12 hours of abuse videos, some of which he had shared with other perverts.
Earlier this year, Sheridan, a computer gaming graduate, pled guilty to three charges.
Sheriff Elizabeth Munro sentenced him to 27 months in jail with an extended sentence of 24 months following his release.
But Sheridan, formerly of Baldovan Terrace, Dundee, is appealing Sheriff Munro’s decision because the punishment was “excessive”.
His case is due to call at the High Court of Appeal in Edinburgh on July 8.
A decision will be made this week on whether Sheridan can appear via video link from custody or if he has to attend the court in person.
In January, Dundee Sheriff Court heard how Sheridan had 496 indecent images and 136 videos of children recovered from his computer, plus another 12,549 pictures of a sexual nature and 44 videos on a separate hard drive.
The majority of images and videos were considered to be “level four”.
That means they contained “sexual activity involving a child or children, or both children and adults”.
Depute fiscal Eilidh Robertson said Sheridan had been downloading pornography since he was in his early twenties.
However, it was only “recently” that he viewed images and videos of children.
Sheridan had been using a programme on his computer that made it more difficult to identify computers downloading such material.
He also shared 16 of the videos via file-sharing software.
Sheridan was snared after police received a tip-off that he was in possession of indecent images and launched an investigation.
The court heard that Sheridan admitted what he was doing was wrong and he knew he would be caught one day.
Just before he was sentenced, George Donnelly, defending, asked the Sheriff to consider a community payback order with unpaid work.
But Sheriff Munro was adamant that only a custodial sentence was “appropriate”.
