A Dundee man who was attacked by his own son said he was “glad” the 20-year-old was behind bars.
Dylan Conway’s brutal assault on dad Patrick left a footprint on the older man’s chest. Conway also set fire to napkins and posted them through his dad’s letterbox.
Conway, of Lansdowne Court, admitted fire-raising and a second charge of assault and was remanded in custody at Dundee Sheriff Court.
Speaking from his home at Lochee this afternoon, Mr Conway said: “I want this to be a lesson for Dylan but I don’t want it to be the end of our relationship.
“I’m glad that Dylan is in custody and, while I haven’t been to see him yet, I will probably visit him sometime before the date he is sentenced.”
Mr Conway is still in pain from the May 25 attack.
The court heard both the assault and fire-raising offences took place at Mr Conway’s flat in Kirk Street.
Fiscal depute Vicki Bell said the fire-raising incident took place at 10.30pm on September 14 last year after Mr Conway informed his son he was not welcome to stay there.
She said Mr Conway asked his son to leave, but instead he sat outside.
The fiscal said: “The complainer fell asleep and was awakened by the sound of his smoke alarm going off.
“He immediately went to the hallway and saw lit paper on the floor at his front door. He stood on the paper and put it out. There was a lot of smoke.”
Mr Conway did not open the door but shouted to his son. He asked “what are you trying to set fire to my house for?” and Conway replied he had done it to wake him up.
Police were informed and Conway admitted setting fire to napkins and posted them through the letterbox.
Earlier this year Conway was again at his father’s flat when he called an ambulance, claiming his dad had “fallen over and cut his head”.
The fiscal continued: “Paramedics found the complainer lying on the ground on his right hand side, with a broken cup next to him. On lifting his top, he had bruises on his chest in the pattern of a footprint and paramedics could see this matched the pattern on the soles of the shoes the accused was wearing.”
Mr Conway received hospital treatment to fractured ribs and cuts and bruises.
During police interview he admitted kicking his dad on the chest.
Sentence was deferred until July 14.
